Jackpot

I am someone who hates people scribbling on books. Especially if it's books borrowed from a library. Especially if it's a book that I'd been wanting to read for a long time. And if it's scribbled with a pen, I find such people monstrous.

As I opened this book I'd borrowed from the library, I couldn't but notice how much you'd scribbled. There was a note on almost every page of the book. I initially cursed you for that. Gave you the choicest of the scoldings.

It was when I read the notes you'd made when I could get an insight into your mind. The English dictionary has no words to describe those tiny notes you'd written in the most ugly handwritings ever. Started wondering if you're a doctor. But I'm glad you're not.

Had to bribe the librarian to let me know who the borrower was.

You must've thought I was the most absurd creature ever to walk in to your office and ask you outon a date. That was the kind of impact your notes had.

You see, I did not want to miss out on meeting a person with the most beautiful mind ever. And when I saw you at your office, I shouted out a silent YES. As if I'd hit jackpot.

Isn't it uncanny that two people with the extreme opposite outlooks in life get so attracted to each other?

I am this person who has colour coded flags for all my work related stuff. I use different pens for different notes, I know what kind of ink goes on what paper etc; and you, you lose a pen a day. Even the borrowed ones.

I am a hopeless romantic who fell in love with you even before seeing you. And you're the most practical person ever to exist on the planet.

But deep down you're a romantic too. You may not say I love you as many times as I do.. but you still tell me I love you everyday. With your gestures, your conduct, and the way you treat me.

During all those exchanged books, those exchanged notes and that library discussions.. I had only one thing in mind, what are we gonna name our kids?

I told you, I am not really practical in life. I think that's one of the reasons we worked.

Now after 45 years of loving you and 40 years if being married to you, I don't think I can live without you anymore. Imagine being in love with a person for such a long time and not being able to see they person anymore.

I still go to that library every day and I open a random book with the hope that I might find your notes in one of them. And when I see these kids romancing amidst books, I say to myself, I did hit a Jackpot!!
